TOKYO FINE ART
ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
NOV. 2-6, 2026

Join us for a 5 DAY immersive fine art architectural photography workshop in Tokyo, during the city’s most beautiful season. In November, Tokyo offers crisp, comfortable weather and autumn foliage at its peak, providing a striking contrast to the city’s refined minimalism and bold contemporary architecture. Over five carefully curated days, we will explore both iconic landmarks and quieter urban spaces, focusing on form, light, rhythm, and atmosphere. Sharon will guide you throughout the city, helping you navigate Tokyo’s scale, pace, and complexity with ease, so there is no need to feel intimidated by its size or energy. With thoughtful planning and on-the-ground guidance, you can fully immerse yourself in the creative experience and concentrate on making strong, expressive fine art images.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE COMPRISED OF 3 PARTS:

PART I: PRE-COURSE ZOOM INSTRUCTIONS - 2 three-hour Zoom sessions (total of 6 hours) in which Sharon Tenenbaum will be teaching how to create her signature Blurred Cityscapes (as in her body of work Impressions of a City). Additionally, we will touch on various forms of fine art architectural photography (abstract, expressive, long exposure, image stacking, advanced b&w post-processing, etc.). Sharon will explore with participants the diverse ways in which each location visited during the workshop can be photographed.

Zoom Session 1: Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST
Zoom Session 2: Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST
Participants will receive the recordings of these sessions.

PART II: FIELD SHOOTING in TOKYO— An immersive on-location shoot in Tokyo, where you’ll photograph some of the city’s most iconic and breathtaking architectural landmarks. Together, we’ll explore a wide range of artistic and contemporary architecture, with Sharon providing hands-on guidance and personalized support to help you refine your vision and execute compelling images.

During our field days, we’ll travel as a group between locations using Tokyo’s efficient public transit system, allowing us to experience the city while moving seamlessly from one inspiring site to the next.

During our stay in Tokyo, we will have an additional 3-hour classroom session for image reviews and ‘course correction’ while we are still on location.

November 1, 2021 - Meet and Greet in the evening at the lobby of the Hosting Hotel (see details below)

PART III: POST-COURSE REVIEW ON ZOOM - Students will submit 6 images of various fine art architectural forms they took during the workshop. Sharon will review and critique the images from participants in 2 additional Zoom sessions of 3 hours each (total of 6 hours).
Zoom Session 3: Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST
Zoom Session 4: Thursday, Dec. 3, 2026 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST
Participants will receive the recordings of these sessions.

NOTE: To maximize your benefit from this workshop, it is recommended to have knowledge of Basic and Intermediate Photoshop (layers, masks, selections, pen tool, and gradients).
The fundamental principles of Image Stacking and Long Exposure Photography will not be taught during the workshop, rather, they will be mentioned, clarified of course, should you have any questions, and most certainly, encouraged to use. If you already have knowledge of these techniques, awesome! You will benefit greatly and Sharon can help you take your images to the next level! However, If you need to brush up on your Photoshop skills and would like to learn the Image Stacking technique, please refer to Sharon’s Online Workshops, which are taught periodically.

HOSTING HOTEL: Our hosting hotel will be the Hotel Gracery Ginza. This hotel was chosen for its convenient location, central to many of our shooting locations, making it especially ideal for walking and proximity to transit stations. Staying nearby will help make the most of our shooting schedule, but again, the choice is entirely yours. We will be leaving this hotel every morning together.

It’s a good idea to arrive a few days early before the workshop begins, giving yourself time to recover from jet lag and adjust to the local time zone, so you can start the experience fully energized and ready to focus on photography.

This workshop will have a wide emphasis on all forms of fine art architecture as well as learning the Blurred Cityscapes technique. Most importantly, as is the case in all of Sharon Tenenbaum’s workshops, there will be a strong emphasis on developing Vision in approaching and creating
Fine Art Architectural images.
