WATER
Water is one of the most versatile subjects in photography. It can be calm and peaceful, powerful and dramatic, or abstract and completely mysterious. For this theme, I want you to look beyond simply photographing a beautiful lake, ocean, or waterfall and explore the many different ways water can become the story.
Experiment with reflections, ripples, movement, transparency, droplets, bubbles, mist, ice, and the interaction between water and light. Try freezing movement with a fast shutter speed or transforming it with a long exposure. Look for the shapes, patterns, textures, and abstract forms that appear when water interacts with its surroundings.
Pay close attention to light and tonal range. Reflections can create beautiful symmetry, while highlights and shadows can reveal shapes and details that might otherwise go unnoticed. You can also use colour, contrast, and even post processing to transform water into something that feels completely different from what you saw in front of you.
Most importantly, don't simply photograph water because it looks beautiful. Think about what you want the image to say. Use water to create a mood, tell a story, evoke an emotion, or reveal something unexpected. As always, composition and creative vision should come first, with technique serving the story rather than becoming the story itself.
